Dr Paul Snelling

MBChB, BMedSci, FRACP

Dr Paul Snelling is a kiwi who finished his medical mis-education in Australia and has never been allowed back.  He was the founding nephrologist for the Darwin Hospital Renal Unit and Director of the Northern Territory Renal Services from 1996 to 2004. From 2004 he has been a Staff Nephrologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and has provided outreach services to Dubbo. Wagga Wagga, Griffith and the communities around Broken Hill.

He has broad interests in clinical nephrology and research interests in Indigenous renal disease and clinical trials in general nephrology and hypertension. He is a Past President of The Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology and Chairman of the New South Wales Renal Network and continues with interests in improvements in service provision for patients with renal disease, particularly Indigenous patients.

His son, who accompanied him on weekend ward rounds when young, has informed him “you’re not a real doctor, you just talk to people”.  Whilst receiving ongoing therapy to rebuild his shattered self-esteem he is happy to see any patient with difficult to manage hypertension or renal disease and chat to them. And hopefully help a wee bit.
